Preparing for the Installation

One of the most important considerations to make sure that the gas line installation is done properly is to have the necessary materials ready.  This means buying the proper gas fittings to do the job correctly.

For majority of domestic gas lines, the common material used is half an inch black pipe, which is significantly smaller, compared to those used for commercial gas fittings.

You will need a combined fitting length of anywhere from 6 to 12 inches more than the actual size that will be installed.  This is to provide for the waste and overlap of the pipe during installation.

Before doing any repair and installation for gas lines, it is important to make sure that the gas supply to the home is completely turned off.  Check the valve on the gas meter at the side of the home.  It can be completely shut off with a quarter turn of the valve.  Verify that the meter in no longer moving as well.

Gas Line Installation

Start by extending the existing gas line using the fitting valves and pipe lengths necessary to allow for the addition of the new gas line.  Make sure that it reaches the new appliance without overstretching the fittings.

Create an airtight fit by coating the pipe threads with glue or taps.  Make sure to wrap the tapes in a clockwise direction to allow it to adhere properly to the threads.  To simplify the assembly, connect some lengths of the gas line fist before moving them to the wall or crawl space where the gas lines are supposed to run.

Take note of 90-degree bends during the assembly because they can make the tightening of the pipes more challenging than usual.

Make use of flexible pipe to ensure proper connection from the new gas line to your gas-fed appliances.  Thread one end to the gas line first and then the other end to the appliance.  Be sure that all connections are glued or taped.  It is important to note that attachment to the gas-fed appliance would rarely need application of pipe glue or tape.

Finalizing and Testing

To finish off the installation, you need to test the connections.  Prepare a mixture of 1:1 ratio of dish-washing liquid and water.  Apply the solution over every seam of the gas line.

Leaks in the gas line would trigger the formation of bubbles.  You need to unscrew the section and remove any pipe glue or tape before reattaching it with the new sealant.

Turn the gas supply back on and test the appliance to make sure that there is a proper flow of gas to it.
